Life lately is this never ending game of balancing online and social reading, watching, and listening. There is never enough time to consume everything I want as there is just so much good stuff out there. I thought I’d do a quick round-up of all of my favorite content. Most of these are fairly recent, although some (mainly the books) are definitely throwbacks.
The Autobiography of Malcolm X (CHANGED. MY. LIFE)
The Bluest Eye (see above…..CHANGED. MY. LIFE)
A Thousand Splendid Sun (there are few times I have cried more that I have when reading this book. It was simply beautiful and Khaled Hosseini is an incredible writer. The Kite Runner is also a strong runner up.)
The New Jim Crow
Half of a Yellow Sun
Dreams from My Father
Podcasts – mostly consumed while cooking, writing, cleaning, and non-meeting work times.
Revisionist History (the Generous Orthodoxy episode had me doing some ugly cries)
Peanut Butter Runner
Well and Good
Be Well Philly
Femme and Fortune
Game of Thrones (beginning and end of story, but I’ll include some more for equity’s sake)
Blackish (I need to have a daughter like Diane…minus of the all evil stuff she says)
Scandal (I don’t know what happened after season 3, but I’m very loyal to Kerry)
How to Get Away with Murder (this show has gotten very loopy lately but my loyalty to Viola is also strong)
This is Us
Designated Survivor (this is a ‘like/annoying) type of watch right now. The writers have this habit of having an actor verbally summarize a scene which has just played out very clearly before the viewer’s eyes, and there is no question as to what has just occurred and its implications. Imagine Alec Baldwin ending every one of his SNL skits by saying “I just made fun of Donald Trump!”. You can’t help but be like “DUH! We just saw it!” We mostly just watch this show out of loyalty to Kiefer Sutherland and because 24 depicted a black president on TV years before Barack Obama was elected.)
Insecure – the scenes when Issa talks herself in the mirror…listen…THAT IS ME!
Kiitana (she is sooooooo beautiful, I can’t even take it)
Kezia Eniang – cool recipes
MistyonPointe – HER BODY…my goodness ( I know she’s super smart and talented too.. BUT. HER. BODY!!)
